Welcome to

Climate Justice Chicago!

Climate Justice Chicago (CJC) is a grass-roots coalition.  CJC recognizes global warming and associated impacts affects human lives - most particularly people of color, low-income, and indigenous communities who are least responsible for the generating greenhouse gas emissions.  Therefore, we are dedicated to reversing global warming through a radical change in both the perception and definition of the problem, and prescriptions for action.

Increased temperatures compromise health, create financial burdens, and result in social and cultural disruptions.  We believe that all solutions to reverse global warming need to be led by those most affected.  This will ensure that the right of all people to live, work, play, and pray in safe, healthy, and clean environments is not compromised.

We recognize that the 10-year window for action recommended in the February 2, 2007 IPCC report demonstrates the immediate need for a radically new paradigm for cutting edge action.  This coalition is dedicated to inventing and implementing that new paradigm, one based on sustainability and just relationships, creating sustainable prosperity for all and a world that works for everyone.

What's New . . .

California Declaration Against Carbon Trading

The February 2008 Declaration details the environmental justice community’s opposition to the use of carbon trading and offsets. Climate Justice Chicago both supports and endorses this Declaration.  Click here to read more.

Larry Lohmann and Carbon Trading

Why is carbon trading ineffective at reversing global climate change and how is it unjust?  Click here or on the icon below and watch Larry Lohmann's recent presentation to environmental organizations and local officials at DePaul University's Loop campus on March 8, courtesy of CAN TV.

Midwest Energy Security and Climate Stewardship Summit

Midwest U.S. states signed agreements on November 15, 2007 that are proposed to   cut greenhouse gases, promote energy conservation and fight global warming. The  area involved in this agreement extends from Ohio west to Kansas.  But . . . carbon trading, "clean" coal, biofuels and carbon sequestration are a large part of these plans and proposals. Click here to read more!
