CA Environmental Justice Movement’s Declaration

on the Use of Carbon Trading Schemes

to Address Climate Change

On February 19, 2008, Environmental Justice (EJ) advocates gathered at five locations across California for a tele-conference to discuss the release of The California Environmental Justice Movement's Declaration Against Use of Carbon Trading Schemes to Address Climate Change. This Declaration details the environmental justice community’s opposition to the use of carbon trading and offsets because of their failure to achieve actual emissions reductions, the irreconcilable problems with trading experiments and offset use, and because of their inability to cause a timely fundamental change in the way we make and use energy.

California Environmental Justice advocates are calling for policies that focus on moving the state away from the fossil fuel infrastructure because such fuels are the overwhelming contributor to climate change and have devastating impacts on poor, low-income and communities of color in California and around the world. The coalition supports use of consistent carbon pricing mechanisms such as a carbon fee.

Climate Justice Chicago supports and endorses the California Environmental Justice Movement's Declaration.  Click here to read the Declaration.

CJC Hosts Larry Lohman

March 1-5, 2008

During his recent visit to Chicago, Larry Lohmann spoke with more than 500 people about the importance of investing in clean, renewable energy and efficiency instead of market-based carbon trading.  His well-researched position on carbon trading indicates that it:

  1. Is NOT effective.  Greenhouse gas emissions are on the rise.

  2. Delays the move away from fossil fuels, a non-renewable and depleting source of energy, to clean, renewable energy such as solar, wind and geothermal energy.

  3. Promotes programs that both harm people, often displacing them from ancestral lands, and often degrades the environment.

Climate Justice Chicago hosted Larry Lohmann March 1 through March 5, 2008.  He is a founding member of the Durban Group for Climate Justice and editor of Carbon Trading: A Critical Conversation on Climate Change, Privatization and Power.  Click here to watch Larry's March 8 presentation at DePaul University.
