Climate Justice Chicago (CJC)

Climate Justice Chicago (CJC) is a grass-roots coalition.  CJC recognizes global warming and associated impacts affects human lives - most particularly people of color, low-income, and indigenous communities who are least responsible for the generating greenhouse gas emissions.  Therefore, we are dedicated to reversing global warming through a radical change in both the perception and definition of the problem, and prescriptions for action.  CJC recognizes that::

  • Global warming is not primarily an environmental issue -It is the build up of heat trapping gases in our atmosphere that result from  the negative after-effect of totally inefficient, un-ecological and non-sustainable economic choices and resource allocations.

  • Mere modification of current unsustainable systems and choices - through shopping, inadequate emission treaty targets and agreements, or more technology - will not solve the problem, either short or long term.

  • We will not be able to consume or techno-fix our way out of our global warming problems.  We will have to methodically plan and implement a new way of living on this Planet that is climate safe and based on sustainability and  local self-reliance.

  • Einstein’s maxim that you cannot solve a problem using the same kinds of thinking that caused it calls for major systemic changes in the ways that financial capital is raised and used, power is wielded, and eco-justice is decided and meted out, if the planetary life-support systems are to continue their functioning – and ours.

  • In taking the actions necessary and sufficient to deal with global warming problems, the following principles must be employed:

  • Selecting actions that prioritize the removal of the greatest amount of greenhouse gases in the shortest time at the lowest total societal cost.

  • Insuring that the counter methods employed are themselves climate-safe; and do not themselves create hazards of their own that equally have the capacity to threaten eco-system integrity or species survival.

  • That the choices must ensure that the needs of those most affected are met, and that people of color and low-inc

  • The survival of the planet, its life-supporting mechanisms, and the human race as a whole are more important than that of any or all of the systems and institutions invented by humankind, past or present.
